Dr. Morris Rossabi, Senior Research Scholar, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University The world has generally viewed Genghis Khan as a barbaric conqueror whose troops raped and murdered hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people and pillaged and often destroyed villages, towns, and cities throughout Asia and Europe. However, several popular writers have recently portrayed him as an advocate of democracy, international law, and women's rights. Morris Rossabi, Senior Research Scholar, Queens College, Columbia University, offers this illustrated lecture, which seeks to provide a balanced depiction of Genghis Khan and to explain the reasons for the myths that have developed about the man and the Mongolian people who established the largest contiguous land empire in world history.

If normally shoot bows using the classic Mediterranean three-finger release it might be interesting to try using a thumb ring with the arrow on the right side, a style commonly associated with Asian steppe archers. There is nothing wrong with the Mediterranean draw but this method of using a bow, especially a short one like a horsebow, has its pros and is definitely worth exploring. ******************************************************************************** My favorite online store for buying swords (worldwide shipping): http://ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kultofathena.com&afid=28632&tm=14&im=1 Some recommended knife makers on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&bbn=3222119011&camp=1789&creative=9325&fst=as%3Aoff&keywords=knife&linkCode=ur2&qid=1416693524&rh=n%3A3375251%2Cn%3A706813011%2Cn%3A3222111011%2Cn%3A3222119011%2Ck%3Aknife%2Cp_89%3AKershaw%7CVictorinox%7CKa-Bar%7CMorakniv%7CTOPS%20Knives%7CColumbia%20River%20Knife%20%26%20Tool%7CBuck%20Knives%7CBenchmade%7CFallkniven%7CSpyderco%7CSOG%20Specialty%20Knives&rnid=2528832011&tag=skallagrim-20 Want to help fund future videos? http://www.patreon.com/skallagrim My Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SkallagrimYT

UNESCO: Urgent Safeguarding List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/USL/00310 Description: The Mongolian Tuuli is an oral tradition comprising heroic epics that run from hundreds to thousands of lines and combine benedictions, eulogies, spells, idiomatic phrases, fairy tales, myths and folk songs. They are regarded as a living encyclopaedia of Mongolian oral traditions and immortalize the heroic history of the Mongolian people. Epic singers are distinguished by their prodigious memory and performance skills, combining singing, vocal improvisation and musical composition coupled with theatrical elements. Epic lyrics are performed to musical accompaniment on instruments such as the ''morin khuur'' (horse-head fiddle) and ''tovshuur'' (lute). Epics are performed during many social and public events, including state affairs, weddings, a childs first haircut, the ''naadam'' (a wrestling, archery and horseracing festival) and the worship of sacred sites. Epics evolved over many centuries, and reflect nomadic lifestyles, social behaviours, religion, mentalities and imagination. Performing artists cultivate epic traditions from generation to generation, learning, performing and transmitting techniques within kinship circles, from fathers to sons. Through the epics, Mongolians transmit their historical knowledge and values to younger generations, strengthening awareness of national identity, pride and unity. Today, the number of epic trainers and learners is decreasing. With the gradual disappearance of the Mongol epic, the system of transmitting historic and cultural knowledge is degrading. Discover some of the scariest most mysterious creatures that have ever roamed this earth, or are they even real? Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7 Pope Lick Monster In most accounts, the Pope Lick Monster is described as a mix between a goat and a man that walks on two legs . It has powerful goat legs, an a rough face with wide nose and weird eyes. It is stated that it has horn with the same color like its fur . It is said that it lures its victims infornt of incoming trains either by hypnotizing them or by imitating human cries for help . Other sources suggest that it uses an axe and it stalks cars as they pass under its bridge so it can jump on them so it can surprise and terrify its victims. 6 Goatman Described again as a mix between a goat and a man it closely resembles something that you can find in the ancient Greek myths and legends. Eyewitnesses claim that it’s more than just a myth due to the fact that people saw it living and breeding in the area of Forestville and Upper Marlboro in Prince George’s County in 1957. Following that wave of sightings, the beast disappeared for 5 years and when it reemerged it was accused of killing fourteen people ,most of which children, that presumably came too close to its hiding place. 5. This is a creature that many people believe that either came from military experiments or straight form out of space. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. The earliest reports of the monster are from 1995 in Puerto Rico, and it have since been reported to be seen almost all around South America. It is supposedly a small but powerful creature that can fly and it leaps onto it’s pray to suck its blood leaving intact bodies with holes in them which are told to be made with surgical precision. Years ago some people claimed to have caught one but soon after the investigation started this story turned out to be totally fake. 4 Ogopogo This monster is said to be Nessies doppelganger . It lurks in the depths of Lake Okanagan Ogopogo in Canada and it has first been witnessed in 1850 by a group of locals that claim it is big boned, dark-colored and has a long body shape. The creature emerged from the lake swam about and dived and disappeared as fast as it initially appeared but the people had enough time to notice that it was quite old and it knew its surroundings well . Initially they thought that they saw a huge water snake but later on came to the conclusion that it was much more than that and gave it the name Ogopogo. 3 Yeti Just like the Bigfoot this creature lives in the Himalayan mountains and it is perceived by the locals as a protector of the forest. The yeti is speculated to be the missing link between the monkey and the modern day human. It is said that in its role as a protector it will not attack if unprovoked and will intervene if a any kind of wrongdoing is being done to the forest. It is described as a huge furry creature resembling a two legged monkey. The scientific community generally regards the Yeti as a legend, given the lack of conclusive evidence, but it remains one of the most famous creatures of cryptozoology. Stories of the Yeti first emerged in the 19th century. 2. Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) The Loch Ness Monster is speculated to be a somehow surviving brachiosaurus living in Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is described like many other monsters that supposively live in other Scottish mountain lakes. Since its allegeable existence that is said to date as far back as 1933 it has been much disputed busted as a myth and proven again with new evidence. The evidence consists of photos that are kind of hard to believe and sonar readings. What can we say sometimes you either believe or not, or you want to believe…or not. 1 Mongolian Death Worm These animals are said to lurk beneath the sands of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. These worms are claimed to be over a meter long and able to ambush it’s pray which can even include unaware humans. It is said that they stalk their prey until it comes in range and after that take a big bite out of it and inject it with its venom. After that the worm would slowly back away and patiently wait to devour what’s left. Although this being bears the name of Mongolian Death Worm, scientists believe, this animal is not a worm because they can’t survive the desert conditions. They speculate that it can be a snake, but the theory does not have strong evidence to sufficiently back it up. What is real and what not we leave up to you ! Even if all of them are hoax they sure make a hell of a goodnight story. If you liked the video and you whant to see more , please subscribe to our channel!

We all know about vampires, dragons, and hounds of hell, but here are some other scary creatures from folklore that you do not want to ever find out are real. These creatures were described to be rather bat-like, which is scary enough. However, what’s more frightening if what they did, which was abduct children so as to eat them later. For that to happen, these creatures would have to be much bigger than a bat, with other descriptions saying they’re a lot more like that of a pterosaur that take babies and take them to Mount Kairatu, their home. 5. Yeti The last simian creature we’re going to talk about on this list is the Yeti, also known as the abominable snowman. Like the Sasquatch and the Yowie, yeti are said to be taller than humans, covered in fur, and ape-like. The difference is that unlike the other two, which are usually said to have dark coloring of the fur, yetis are usually depicted as having white fur, which is probably attributed to where they’re said to inhabit--which are the high and cold regions of the Himalayas in Tibet, Bhutan, and Nepal. Though there have been many sightings and yetis have been part of the local landscape for a long time, the hair samples found by researchers in a genetic study found that the hair matched a prehistoric bear from the Ice Age. 4. Cthulhu Created by revered writer H.P. Lovecraft, the legend of Cthulhu is one that many people take as being a real entity. In literature, the creature made its first appearance in “The Call of Cthulhu” a short story that was published in Weird Tales back in 1928. It’s known as “the great old one” among the other cosmic entities in the world created by Lovecraft, with its characteristics said to be like a giant octopus combined with a dragon, though it appears rather human-like in its stature. Lovecraft writes that the creature is “a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline” and is supposed to be hundreds of meters tall. To look at Cthulhu is said to drive you insane. 3. Mongolian Death Worm The story of the mongolian death worm is an interesting one since it doesn’t necessarily derive from thousand year olds myths and that its history stems more from real-life accounts. Whether what people were seeing was actually a huge monster of a worm, is up for debate since there has been no physically conclusive evidence that these things are real. The first known account in western history came from Roy Chapman Andrews’s book On the Trail of Ancient Man which was published in 1926. The worm is said to live in the Gobi desert, described like a giant worm with sharp teeth, said to live underground, only emerging from hibernation during the months of July and June. What you see here is just a prop depiction based off the description of what they’re commonly accepted to look like. 2. Jikininki Then there’s the Jikininki--the ghost like creature that feasts on humans. Unlike regular ghosts in traditional folklore, these mythical creatures from the legends of Japan don’t merely just haunt you and cause random objects to fly or possess you. No, the Jikininki is much more frightening than that and are said to be spirits of people who were greedy during their life, and therefore were subject to roam the earth eating other people. Which, when you think about it, hollowing someone out emotionally is what greedy people do in real life, so it makes sense. Manananggal Looking at it, the Manananggal seems to look like a vampire, just a more frightening version of the ones we’re now familiar with in recent pop culture. There’s no sparkling in the sun or looking cool in leather with this vampiric creature that originates from the mythological stories in the Philippines. These monsters are said to eat people as well as suck blood from their victims. Most times, these vampires are said to be in the form of females, which contrasts the often male depictions of vampires in the west. They prey on sleeping women, who are often pregnant, and suck the hearts out of fetuses--using their long tongues. And chasing them away is not so different from what you know of repelling vampires: just have some garlic and sunlight handy.
